Cool Linux Programs I Use

Office

OpenOffice.org - Office suite - word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, etc.
The 2.0 version (beta at this writing) is much improved, with great Microsoft Office compatibility.
Scribus - Desktop publishing
Glabels - Label designer and printer, for business cards, CD labels, etc.
Dia - Diagram editor, like Visio
Abiword - A lightweight word processor with good MS Word support.
Gnumeric - A lightweight spreadsheet with good MS Excel support.
Jpilot - A palm pilot desktop, w/ sync and editing.

Graphics

The Gimp - The GNU Image Manipulation Program
Sodipodi - A vector graphics program, for SVG. I couldn't find a better open source one when I was using it.

Network

Firefox - Great web browser. Recommended by Wall Street Journal, Forbes, USA Today.
Thunderbird - Great email client, related to Firefox. Very solid. Spam filtering.
Gaim - Instant Messaging (IM) client for all major protocols - AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, etc.
Evolution - Groupware email client with MS Exchange support - Calendar, Todo, Contacts, etc.

Multimedia

Mplayer - Probably the best DVD and video player. Use "gmplayer" to get the GUI.
One nice feature I haven't seen elsewhere is volume normalization.
Xine - Another great DVD and video player.
Xmms - Music player (MP3s, etc.)
Grip - CD Ripper (Convert CDs to MP3 files (or other, such as ogg).)
Audacity - Audio editor - very slick.
K3b - CD and DVD Burning - The Linux world's favorite graphical burning app.

Servers/Programming/etc

Bluefish - Powerful raw HTML editor.
Vim - My favorite version of the obtuse "vi" editor.
Ssh - A secure way to connect to systems for shell access, file transfer, etc.
FTP and Telnet called. They want their cleartext passwords back.
Apache - Everyone's favorite web server.
PHP - A very nice web programming language.
